Old style awnings were made of materials like canvas or tin that would deteriorate after three to five years of exposure to ultraviolet light, wind and rain. New, weather resistant awning materials have a longer useful life, and look better longer, too. If you're concerned that a cloth awning will start to show signs of wear like, say, your old camping tent or hammock, the materials used in today's awnings are rated for colorfastness and resistance to ultraviolet radiation. They are also treated to make them resistant to mold and mildew.
